Above is the original map of the United States during the Civil War time period.  The Union States are located in the dark blue and the Confederate states are in the gray.

When people ask “What is the Union in the Civil War?”  many people just think of the original colonies in the Northeastern part of the United States.  These states along with California in the West and Iowa, Minnesota and Kansas in the Midwest were all members of the Union which opposed the Confederate.
